A mythological trio, ... Aphrodite, Pan and Eros. Presumably Aphrodite uses her sandal in her right hand to fend of the erotic advances of Pan, while the winged Eros comes to her aid.

Two views of an approximately life-sized statue of Athena ... if goddesses come in life sizes!

According to the museum's sign, it is "the truest and best copy of the cult statue of Athena Parthenos by Pheidias, erected in the Parthenon in 438 BC." The original in the Parthenon, now long gone, was 12-times larger!

This copy dates from 3rd century AD.

Found in pieces in a shipwreck, the "Artemision Jockey" is a life sized bronze sculpture from approximately 140 BC. The young jockey is holding the remnants of the reins in his outstretched hand.

A bronze mirror, now thoroughly corroded, with ivory handles. 15th-14th century, BC, from Mycenae, found in the Tholos tomb of Clytaemnestra.

The description card said "Bronze, with ivory handle, depicting richly clad bare-breasted women" ... can you find them? Perhaps the little drawing in the lower right corner will help.

Jeanne Wells takes the smallest of things and turns them into the grandest of visions.It was the third photo she posted here (gravity & grace) that was my first introduction into all things Wellsian.
She is...Nitro Girl...given to her subterranean (well, it used to be subterranean) darkroom sessions that would last for HOURS.
Many, if not most, of her images come from within the property line of her Quaker Estate, though Jeanne herself was unceremoniously booted out of Charm School and can cuss like a sailor, given the inappropriate occasion.

While this isn't my backyard, it is the Gnome's and all photography is done in-the-buff...not Wellsian at all. But each and every photographer is granted unconditional Artistic License. Whether that results in Art is certainly suspect in some cases.
Some stuff just flat out sucks.
I hope this doesn't count as the latter.
But, like Nitro Girl, after the photo is taken, I really don't give a damn...at least not much.

Ærøskøbing Bottle Peter Museum

The last of the Ship in a Bottle series. In this one are two ships and a wharf! I've taken shots of both sides so you can see "behind the scene".

"Ærøskøbing is a town-in-a-bottle kind of place. Wander down lanes right out of the 1680s, when the town was the wealthy home port to more than 100 windjammers. The post office dates to 1749, and cast-iron gaslights still shine each evening. Windjammers gone, the harbor now caters to German and Danish holiday yachts. On midnight low tides you can almost hear the crabs playing cards.

"The "Bottle Peter" museum is a fascinating house with a fleet of 750 different bottled ships. Old Peter Jacobsen died in 1960 (probably buried in a glass bottle), leaving a lifetime of his tedious little creations for visitors to squint and marvel at."

A small house in Ærøskøbing contains the "Bottle Peter Museum". It has 750 different bottled ships. Old Peter Jacobsen, who made his first bottle at 16 and his last at 85, bragged that he drank the contents of each bottle, except those that contained milk (from Rick Steve's "Scandinavia 2004").

Cast in 752AD, using hundreds of tones of molten bronze. The current head dates from 1652 after several decapitations due to earthquakes.

It is 53 feet (16m) high. Quoting from our guidebook: "When the figure is given a dusting, visitors may be startled to see four or five monks standing in the Buddha's upturned palm."

At last we are inside the Todai Ji temple.

From the people present you can get a sense of the size of the "Great Buddha" or "Diabutsu". It is so large that 5 monks can stand on his outstretched palm!

PREGNANT FEMALE FIGURE
Early Cycladic 2700-2300 B.C.
Marble

Recognizable by their breasts and incised pubic triangles, the vast majority of Cycladic figures are female. Only about 5 percent of existing examples appear to be men..... The carver of this figure took particular interest in the female body and its physical condition. The swollen abdomen suggests pregnancy, which raises an important question: do such images depict human beings or do they represent a fertility deity worshipped in the Cyclades?
