I found this Negative, fascinated by it's impact but I could not remember what happened.
It was about 1967, In Bern (Switzerland)

Two days ago, whilst asleep, I remembered what the story was.

The Clock Towers watch broke down, naturally this was a national disaster, a SWISS clock work breaking down!
The works are famous for its display when the wheel spins out performing an array of amusing scenarios.

This picture is the moment before the reinstated clock was showing that the world is as it should be.

I am glad I found this picture, at the time when I took it, it meant little to me but some pictures ripen with time.
Another strange thought is that nobody featured in this picture could possibly be alive today.

During the wet days of my trip to Cumbria the opportunity to visit scenes indoors from my past was tempting.

This is the little Church at Wasdale Head. An early landlord of the Wasdale Head Inn (Will Ritson) used to boast that Wasdale held four records in England. It had the smallest Church, the highest mountain (Scafell), the deepest lake (Wastwater) and the biggest liar, himself!

Continuing the "as we were" theme, this is an image from 1955 when our transport was a motor bike with sidecar! (You don't see many of those rigs these days!). The bike was a Triumph Thunderbird 650cc ohv and the sidecar was a Watsonian Avon, I guess that this rig would be worth a lot these days!! Why didn't I keep it?!!

I am in the pilot's seat with Mary posing in the "chair", the guy on the left is my old Dad and my Mom is peeking over his shoulder. The young lad is my only brother, born while I was in the army!

Tristner at only 2767m is not one of the highest points of the Zillertal Alpen but from Gasthof Roßhag in the Zemmgrund it has quite an impressive appearance.

This shot was taken on 2nd September 1992, Yes I do keep records, or at least, I did then!!
This was during the final holiday that Mary and I took in Mayrhofen, before she became too ill to travel.

Jan. 3rd would have been Mary's birthday so, as usual, I am living in the past.

This shot taken in December 1979 on Helvellyn. We had traversed Striding Edge, the ridge in the background, and were climbing the north-east face of Helvellyn. And, danger, we had no crampons and only one ice axe (mine!). But we survived!!

Saving this old photo from about 1908. The girl number two from right is my grandmother. The soldiers could eat every day "Bye Maren" in the House behind them. Maren can be seen in another vintage pic. of mine. Notice the fingerprint made by accident of the photographer in the developing proces (in the bottom of the pic) :-)

How about 1.7 M.Pixels?

Yes, this one was shot with a very early digital compact which was really pocket sized and was quite limited in its performance. Images could only be shot in jpeg and could be quite "blocky", but a little judicious use of Gaussian Blur could relieve this somewhat.

This was taken on Skye, from the south ridge of Bla Bheinn looking across towards Sgurr na Stri and Loch na Creitheach.
Taken in October 2003, exposure was 1/223sec @ f5.6. I was quite impressed with the results, so don't be too harsh on it by modern standards!

With so much discussion about sunrise images I felt the urge to trawl through my archives to see if I had anything presentable.

This is a shot from 1962 at the Dresdner Hütte in the Stubaier Alpen in the Austrian Tirol. We were up at 04:00 hrs to start the ascent of the Zuckerhütl, it's a wonderful time of day in the mountains. The mountain seen here is the Schaufelspitze which I climbed the next year, alas without a camera!
(Sorry about the image quality, I must take time to rescan this Tx.).

I have finally recovered from the tummy bug which forced the postponement of my trip to the Lake District. I am hoping to leave here early on Wednesday, don't know when I will be back!
Additionally I am into a fairly rigorous get fit regime to try to regain some degree of ability to walk long distances again, this is with the full approval of my Doctor, although he keeps repeating the mantra "you must not fall!". Things seem to be going well, I walked 10.5 painful miles on Saturday! My Doc assures me that this type of activity will strengthen my back muscles and ease the pain which nags at me constantly. It seems to be working so I will persevere!

In view of the interest shown in my shots of the Staumauer Zillergrund I thought that I would upload an image to show it in full context.

This was taken in July 2006, yes less than two years ago when I was still young and healthy! lol.
It shows the dam as seen from the Plauener Hütte. The title is quite apt as the small building in the f/g contains the hydro electric generator to provide power to the hut.
We had climbed here from the dam in just over one and half hours.

I posted a similar shot to this in August 2006 which I feel was much superior but that image did not show the little hut.

Another image from my trip to Scotland in March 2006.

A snow fence seen on our way to the summit of Aonach Mor as we were leaving the skiing area. The clouds were coming down and we had no views from the summit and had to navigate our way back using compass and map.

I did not realise this at the time, but this was to be my last ascent of a Munro in Scotland, but then I never was a Munro Bagger!

Going against the light with a low sun is always a challenge. I liked the way the misty layers were emphasized by the light.

Again the scan was a bit noisy but a bit of Gaussian Blur has softened it a little.

The view is from Sàil Gharbh down towards the narrows at Kylesku. There used to be a free ferry across these, they are now spanned by a bridge which eases considerably the trip to the far north west of Scotland.

I debated and debated on whether or not I should submit this, but I just wanted to follow up my last submission with a bit of background info on the "Kelley's Korner" history. I have to thank Jan for motivating me to submit this image (and my last on this subject).

This article appeared in the local Santa Barbara newspaper in 1970 . It shows my Grandfather and Grandmother who started "Kelley's Korner" in this 1934 gasoline station.

...and for those who have noticed the special spelling of the word "corner" in the sign "Kelley's Korner". An explanation is in order.

The spelling was meant to get a person's attention. :o)) You see, that was the logo for our family's grocery store/market, which sat on a corner from 1934 to 1970. It was a Santa Barbara landmark.

This image is of one of our ads. I don't know the year. But, it can't be that long ago...probably about 1963-64. I mean, after all, I remember buying gas for my VW Bug @ 25 cents/gal at that time....cost me a whole $2.50 to fill up!!! Those were the days..... :o)))

An old abandoned gas station in no man's land.

I love driving around countrysides just to see what is there. The other day I came across this place and stopped for a few images. You know how it is when you are in these little place...you can just feel eyes watching you everywhere. Sometimes it is eerie, especially in remote places.

this, however is done with a strange lens, called Plasticca, by Oskar Zwerzina...

talk about "diana on Large Format.."

it can actually fill out a 8x10" neg, but this is 4x5.

it has a built in light yellow filtering, so nature looks SO nice on the screen..

next to come is my newest toy - the Hermagis Portrait lens..

Peter Chisholm has shown us the beauty of these minor Scottish Peaks. I promised him I would upload a vintage shot of the summit of one of them for him to see.

So here we see the Cobbler in the "Arrochar Alps". And yes, that is Mary, patiently sitting there waiting for me to get things on record.
I subsequently climbed to the actual summit and Mary took a shot of me up there, I'll show it to you sometime!

Yet another image from our 1987 trip to the Plauener Hütte.

I've posted this to show just how large this glacier was, only 19 years ago. It is now just a shadow of its former self!

Once again, taken on Agfa CT100, and scanned with my Epson Perfection 2400Photo. The "whites" are a bit burnt out, sorry about that!!

(Come to think of it, this particular "White" is also a bit burnt out!).

Yesterdays anniversary has, naturally I feel, prompted a delve through shots of the times which Mary and I shared in many places.

I came across this rather poor image of the Plauener Hütte taken in 1987, taken on Tx and then scanned to my pc. I posted it as a comparison with the recent uploads of Rich Nicholls and myself.

Of course it was really uploaded because the lady propping up the bench outside the hut was Mary, under her floral sunhat. It was hot, despite the snow!

Sorry about the grainy finish, you don't have to rate this one, I uploaded it as an act of self indulgence really!

A poor snapshot, soft focus and grainy, shows Mary at Lulworth Cove on our honeymoon in 1951. It is nevertheless among my most treasured memorabilia.

This is a farewell upload, I am off on my travels again, hopefully to collect some more images for your pleasure.

Here we see the Ahornspitze and the Stilluppgrund, viewed from the Penken Haus. A shot taken in 2002 with my old Fuji MX1700 Zoom. 1700 pixels, how things have changed! I'm sorry, the image shows its age, but I like it!!

these machines used to be everywhere some time ago. back then, a nickel had some purchasing power, so going for weight and horoscope was a well considered option. the horoscopes were written on tightly rolled, brightly coloured paper scrolls that could be re-read and kept as a treasure. I wonder why they stopped producing the horoscopes. Now the machines are all but extinct.

. . . . . Heinrich Harrer, who died on Saturday at the age of 93.

Heinrich Harrer, born in Hüttenberg, Austria, was a member of the team which made the first ascent of the then notorious "Mordwand", the "wall of death", the North Wall of the Eiger in Switzerland.

With his comrades, Fritz Kasparek, Ludwig Vorg and that great mountaineer Anderl Heckmair, they completed the climb, which had claimed the lives of so many young men who had previously attempted the route, in July 1938.

This shot was taken exactly 50 years later when Mary and I were in Grindelwald with the intention of climbing the Eiger by its North East Ridge. As you can see from the shot, the conditions were not good, far to much new soft snow, and new snow avalanches were falling continually down the North Face. We abandoned our attempt before even starting. We lived to tell the story!!!! lol!

Harrer subsequently went on to escape from a PoW camp in India and cross the borders into Tibet where he eventually became tutor to the young Dalai Lama, teaching him English and geography. Amazingly, they shared the same birthday, and they became firm friends. Harrer spent seven years in Tibet, if you haven't read his book about this, you should. A fascinating read, as is his report of the Eiger climb, Die Weiße Spinne, the White Spider, a feature on the North Face which very nearly claimed the lives of the team.

We mourn the loss of one of the worlds great pioneering mountaineers.

Another shot from my Christmas holiday in the beautiful Zillertal in the Austrian Tirol.

I really must add a dedication here to Olaf, who loves his old railways.

This is the Zillertalbahn, one of the great tourist attractions of the Zillertal, a little narrow-gauge railway, over one hundred years old and still in commercial use. Diesel Electric is the normal mode of locomotion, but several steam locos have been preserved and are in everyday use. We see one here.

Hemingray No. 40

A telephone insulator, model Hemingray No. 40, recently removed from service on the poles that serve my neighborhood and now resting on a deck railing as a design element, did not seem like a suitable subject until it got briefly covered with a wet plastic tarp on a warm sunny day and was transformed. The date on one of the removed insulators was 1895. I think that was the batch date for the mold and not the production date, but just a bit of info to share.

I was born in Shropshire, I left there in 1953 but I often visit, just to stir a few memories. My present home here, near Lichfield, is only about 30 miles distant

The nearest reasonably sized town to my birthplace is Bridgnorth. This has a great history, dating back to well before the Civil War, during which its Norman Castle was destroyed by Cromwell's Roundheads. It was also bombed during the second world war!

The town is on two levels, this shot is taken from Hightown, on the ramparts of the Castle, looking down on to the river Severn bridge in Lowtown.

More archive work. My recent trip to Scotland has had me digging out old memories, in the form of images shot there over 30 years ago!

I am hoping that some kind Scots mountaineer will help me by confirming that this shot was taken from the summit Of Cul Mor, looking towards Creag nan Calman, Cul Beg and Loch Lurgainn. That's where I think it was!!!!

I know that it was May 1974 and it was shot on Agfachrome, end of records!
I'm getting old, my memory is failing!!!

A real archive image! Quite a bit of interest has been shown in the view of Suilven from "ground level"!

This shot, taken about 1973, was taken from near the rounded summit of the mountain looking towards the eastern peak.

An ancient transparency, scanned and cleaned up just a bit. Sorry about the sky, that's exactly as it was!

I've seen quite a few "retro" images posted just lately and this has encouraged me to "trawl" through my old files

This is a shot from my first ever roll of colour film. It was Kodachrome II, 50 asa, if I remember correctly. We had climbed Cadair Idris in Mid-Wales and Susan, my young niece, and Kim, the Border Collie, were both feeling the heat and height as we came away from the summit! Interesting to look at Susan's feet, her boots had hurt her so she was walking wearing only socks!

The year was 1961, if my old files are to be believed!

Just noticed, this was my 300th upload, where on earth did they all come from?!

Lately, Alberta has had storms brewing...and rain to go with it. Because I find stormy skies more interesting than clear blue ones, I find myself out storm chasing. Here is one such shot from last week. I shot more today and haven't had a chance to view them yet but, hopefully, I will have a series going. If I manage to capture any funnel clouds this Summer, I'll either be doing it on a fast run or in the center of it! In that case, please have a day of silence in my memory!! Hope you enjoy.

Can you smell his burning rubbers?

It was Le Lemming's birthday on the 22nd so this is a belated wish for the dear ole boy. Altho we've never met in person, Matty has been a close friend since way back in the days of nightmares and hangings somewhere else. We have discussed the fact that it was lucky we never attended the same school or we both would have spent major time in the principal's office or else been on the run on his motorbike!

His humor, compassion and thoughtfulness have been a major comfort to me over the years. If something goes wrong to upset me, he has a way of putting his arm around me and making the 'bad' go away.
Have a super year, dear friend...stay wise, happy and healthy!

Now about this image....I went out looking for something suitable for Matty and shot this car yesteray on my way home from a meeting. One shot is all I had time for before the owners jumped in and took off. Shooting the image was the easy part...but the processing to make it Matty-style was much more time consuming. I wanted to present this in the style we have become accustomed to seeing Matty post. So, with a lot of PS, this is what I came up with...hope u like the driver of this old car, too:) That image was scoffed off his bio shot;) Snicker! The car was red and white and it nearly killed me to convert it to b/w but I do like it just as much.

Anyway, added grain, B/W, wheels, a James Dean attitude...that's MattyBoy to me! Enjoy....

Just feeling in a creative mood this time...I like to see it in others, too. I used a few different filters for this image to give it a 'romantic' feeling of days gone by. I personally think it is fun to make an image sing to you. So, on that note, I hope you enjoy....

Fort Hancock and Sandy Hook proving Ground Historic District reflects the history of a vital defense installation guarding New York City from 1895 until 1974. The Proving Ground, established in 1874, played a key role in the development of advanced weaponry, as well as radar.
The district contains approximately 110 significant historic buildings and 16 batteries dating from the late 19th century through the mid 20th century.

This is a palmtree in the entrance of the somptuous Majorelle Garden in Marrakech.
I put this picture in the vintage category because this garden is a creation from the beginnings of the 20th century. Jacques Majorelle was its creator and Yves Saint-Laurent after him.

I thought that I would get away from mountain landscapes for a short time!

We have several local preserved railways here in Staffordshire, U.K.
The nearest one is only a mile or so from my home, The Chasewater Railway. Here is their Saddle Tank Loco, "Asbestos", at the Chasewater Heath station.

These railways are maintained by volunteer unpaid enthusiasts, their enthusiasm can be seen in the way the clouds are reflected in the polished paintwork of this lovely little 0-4-0 engine.

A few weeks ago, this loco was driven by "royalty". The Duke of Gloucester took over the controls whilst on a visit to Staffordshire.

Andy Kim Dippie celebrates his birthday tomorrow. I know that he intends to be out with his camera, probably by the side of a canal, looking for images. I thought that he might like this image, taken a few miles South of his home.

I shot this one last Saturday, on a very dull grey day, at a spot called Fradley Junction which is where the Trent and Mersey canal links with the Coventry canal. The only colour around were these late blooms and berries by the bridge.

Before the advent of the railways the canals were a vital line of communication in England, criss-crossing the country with a network of navigable waterways. The Trent and Mersey was one of the earliest and it is still in use, although principally for pleasure traffic.

Happy birthday Andy, and thank you for the inspiration you continue to provide for my camera work.

For a most talented photographer, artist and gentleman.

This is the pre-Civil War Andy Lynch Log Cabin that was removed from Brightwater, Arkansas, east of Rogers, and was reconstructed in Bentonville Arkansas. My youngest son, a superbly talented carpenter/cabinet maker/craftsman did a great deal of the remodeling of the structure. He had to learn some primitive construction skills and became very good at chinking the joints between the logs.

The property was not open when I arrived but it appeared to me that the best shot was from outside of the gate anyway.

Some PS work to assist with the IR.

I discovered this old trailer(I'm guessing it's a trailer...almost like one you would see in a circus) that dates back to the 1930s-40s. It was in quite a state of disrepair. Roof was caving in, wood rotting, etc.

I felt that a high contrast presentation would be most fitting for this old relic.

What amazes me is with all of the supposed advances in technology that the tires are still up and look at the chrome on that hubcap. Not shot in IR and not Ps'd to death ... for a change. I am still amazed at what can come out of that 2.1 MP UZI.

This is when I wish links worked here. I reworked this photo in Photoshop CS to compare it to the first one I put up here which was edited using photoshop elements. It's a RAW capture and I used the plug in for elememts (cost more than the program) and the RAW conversion included in CS is much more capable. Also as CS allows most editing to be done in 16 bit mode I think it came out just a touch better. Beat me up and slap me around a bit on this and if you find the other one (Tables) to compare it with please let me know exactly what you think.

Kodak will do longer be making higher grade cameras, just the plastic lens ones. Times are changing and so are cameras and photography.
As well as this camera, since I broke the lens on the back of the camera you see in the upper left. I was trying to clean it and it was extremely brittle.
Was my Grand father's Camera. He was a photographer in the Village in NYC from around 1915 to 1920s.
I know he must be cussing me as well as my Dad who used it as well.

I am not sure if this is a pre-brownie Kodak camera. It has a wick and a amber glass lens under the Kodak front part which lifts up.

Benhind that is a slot for a peice of film? There is a lever hindge where you can slide in the film and close to reduce light.

It would be nice to know what it is, my Grand Father's camera. One of many he had collected. Any ideas?

Still Stands The House

This abandoned old house is located in Smokey Lake, Alberta. A storm had just passed and the skies still hadn't cleared up. I left this as natural as possible for my friend Craig Robinson...who likes to see reality when he posts images. Nothing much was done to this other than a slight crop and a minor levels adjustment.

There was no hint of what the rich, deep original color of the paint was. I'm sure that many hours of hard labor had once been spent with a can of paste wax. Some of the chrome still reflected like a brand new mirror. In spite of our " newer and better technology " ... all four tires still held air as if they had just been filled and checked. Time was slowly erasing the Better Days.

This pottery was taken in a museum in the south of France. It is from the Romans period. And came across the ages till us.
not sure these fragile roses....
