This brick, Gothic Revival building was built in 1850 and was originally used as a storehouse for grain paid to the seigneur (in lieu of cash) by his tenants. According to Parks Canada, “between 1858 and 1871, Napoléon Bourassa, the renowned painter and son-in-law of Louis-Joseph Papineau, set up his studio on the first floor of this shed. The walls and ceiling are still covered with fresco-style working drawings, making this an exceptional room in terms of heritage value.” The Granary now contains exhibits on the life and political career of Louis-Joseph Papineau, the Papineau family, the history of the domain under the seigneurial system, and the famous Seigniory Club.

To get the whole temple without people, you can get very close. But then it calls for a wide angle shot. Hence a panoramaa of 4 vertical images, stitched side by side.

"Full Window" viewing is kind of nice.

From our "Eyewitness" guidebook: "This temple was begun in 447 BC. It was deigned by the architects Kallikrates and Iktinos, primarily to house the 12m (40 ft)high statue of Athena Parthenos (Maiden), sculpted by Pheidias. Taking nine years to complete, the temple was dedicated to the goddess in 438 BC. Over the centuries it has been used as a church, a mosque and as an arsenal, and has suffered severe damage. Built as an expression of the glory of ancient Athens, it remains the city's emblem to this day."

"During the Venetian seige of Acropolis in 1687, the temple was bombarded with cannon fire. The Turks were using the temple as an arsenal at the time, and the ensuing explosion demolished much of it, including the roof, the inner structure and 14 of the outer columns.."

Koreans have always built in wood. Even the greatest palaces and temples were wooden structures with clay walls and tile roofs. Time passes, wars and invasions, rebellions and assassinations, regimes rise and fall, cities grow and prosper, others decline and are abandoned.

But Korea is not a land of ruins. Wood and clay soon disappear and return to the earth. Only foundation stones remain, until they too are covered with soil and grass.

The only significant structures traditionally built with stone throughout Korean history have been pagodas. Every Buddhist temple had one, or a pair, within the inner courtyard in front of the main sanctuary.

As fortunes shifted, regimes came and went, great temples arose and in time burned to the ground and were abandoned. Throughout the valleys and plains of Korea you can find these standing alone in the fields and rice paddies, the last remnants of some great monastic community, or some small forgotten and nameless temple.

Here is one example, in a small valley north of my city. Constructed during the Unified Shilla period, it has been standing here for well over 1000 years. But no name or memory remains. Only this solitary stone pagoda, with its carved guardians at the doorway.

Buildings in Korea have traditionally been constructed of wood with clay walls. For large structures with heavy tile roofs, the main supporting beams are of crucial importance. Today Korea imports timber from the forests of Indonesia, but in the old days a large tree was a rare and wonderful thing. So when old buildings were torn down and rebuilt, they almost always reused the good wood. Here is an interesting example of a very old pillar, obviously recycled from an older building, certainly many hundreds of years old, since this building itself is very old.

In earlier days, the rural aristocratic gentry class, called Yangban, were the only ones who were allowed to have tile roofs, the peasants all had small thatched houses. In many areas these old Yangban houses are falling into ruin as their descendants have largely migrated to the cities. But this lovely old Yangban village of Jirye has become a kind of artists colony. A number of potters, painters and sculptors, and a couple of writers, have moved here and renovated the old houses. A few of the older people here still farm, but most are transplanted urban artists, and everyone is very friendly and happy to see visitors. It's far off the beaten track, so outside visitors are very few.

inside silvacane abbey, one of the most beautiful cistercian monasterys in provence/france.

silva cana means "forest of reeds" in latin.

as is usual with early cistercian buildings, the focus of the architecture is entirely on simplicity, austerity and harmony. the church interior, without decoration or distraction, is an outstanding example of 12th century cistercian architecture and of the spirit of the Cistercian order. Even the acoustics of the church imposed a certain discipline upon the monks; because of the stone walls, which created a long echo, the monks were forced to sing slowly and perfectly together. the abbey is fundamentally connected to its site, and is an exceptional example of spirituality and philosophy transformed into architecture. it is distinguished, like other Cistercian abbeys, by its purity, harmony, and lack of decoration or ornament.

build on the hills is a common habit among low-income people in my country, nobody has an answer for why they do.
I have my own theory: They mostly come from the Andes and are accustomed to see things from above and here on the coast the only way to make it is to build on the hills.
NOTE: The rich people make the same but only for fashion in very spensive lands for feel the owners of all, hahahaha!
PS, the colors of these houses are typical Andean colors.

the old town of siwa oasis (Egypt) was called Shali to the west of Cairo.

(The ruins of Shali dates back to the 13th century, and was in full use until 3 days of heavy rain destroyed it in 1926. The houses were originally built to last a couple of decades, then be rebuilt or fixed after light rain. The building material was kershef, a mixture of salt and clay. It is not water-proof.

From its location at the top of Chapultepec Hill, Chapultepec Castle is the eternal witness of Mexico’s history; as it has watched armies, presidents and emperors, who have left a permanent mark on the nation, walk among its walls and gardens.

Chapultepec has always been a crucial place for Mexican history; since pre-Columbian times some sanctuaries existed there and it was a place of rest for the Aztec emperors. This place was thought to have magical importance by the Aztec people, as they considered there were two entrances to the underworld: one in the city of Mitla in Oaxaca, and the other in a cavern in Chapultepec Hill, which today is a bit hidden but it’s still visible on the southern side of the hill. Also, the springs of the area supplied the populous city with water during this time, and later, in times of the Viceroyship.

Chapultepec Castle (Castillo de Chapultepec in Spanish) is located on top of Chapultepec Hill. It was built in 1785 and completed in 1863. The name Chapultepec stems from the Náhuatl word chapoltepec which means "at the grasshopper's hill". It is located in the middle of Chapultepec Park in Mexico City at a height of 2,325 meters (7,628 ft) above sea level. The site of the hill was a sacred place for Aztecs, and the buildings atop it have served several purposes during its history; including that of Military Academy, Imperial residence, Presidential home, observatory, and presently, the Museo Nacional de Historia (National History Museum).

It is the only castle in North America that was used to house sovereigns – the reigning Mexican Emperor Maximilian I, and his consort Empress Carlota, during the Second Mexican Empire.

Helsinki Cathedral (Finnish: Helsingin tuomiokirkko or Suurkirkko, Swedish: Helsingfors domkyrka or Storkyrkan) is an Evangelical Lutheran cathedral of the Diocese of Helsinki, located in the centre of Helsinki, Finland. The church was originally built as a tribute to the Grand Duke, Nicholas I, the Tsar of Russia and until the independence of Finland in 1917, it was called St. Nicholas' Church.

Uspensky Cathedral

The red brick Uspensky Cathedral is the largest orthodox church outside of Eastern Europe. Completed in 1868, the church has been designed by famous church architect Aleksey M. Gornostajev. The thirteen gilded cupolas of the church depict Christ and His twelve apostles. There is also one gilded cupola in the form of a flame on the bell tower. The church’s name is derived from the Slavic word uspenie meaning death.

Built in 449-440 BC, the Hephaisteion is the best preserved building in the Ancient Agora of Athens, and one of the best preserved of all ancient Greek temples. It overlooks the Ancient Agora of Athens from it's hilltop position.

Taivassalo Church is the oldest of the three medieval stone churches in Finland that are dedicated to the Holy Cross. The construction of the church is believed to have begun between the years 1425 to 1440. In 1460s, the third aisle was built and the inner walls were decorated with new murals. It was the first time in Finland that frescos were painted to nearly all important surfaces of a church by a group of professional artists.

St Olaf’s Church in Tyrvää is a late medieval stone church that was recently rebuilt after a fire in 1997. The church stands in a beautiful surrounding of Lake Rautavesi in the middle of the Finnish countryside. The congregation of Sastamala is applying for UNESCO World Heritage Site status for St Olaf’s Church in Tyrvää.

An attempt to get in as much of this grand place as possible, but there still can be no feeling like actually being there, surrounded by this incredible array of stained glass.

I think "Full Window" viewing is rather nice for this last one in the series.

The eighteenth-century suburban Baroque villa is inside the park with the same name, which is almost 75,000 square meters large. The large French-style lawn in front of the building is surrounded by a rich vegetable heritage with trees, shrubs, and flowers, both with local and exotic species (nettle trees, sugar oak, magnolia). In the middle of nineteenth century, the Marquess Ferdinando of Breme and of Sartirana enriched the park with the building of aviaries and greenhouses, also adding statues and stoneware vases; at the time the eccentric taste of the owner also led to the introduction of animals, such as deers, mouflons, and gazelles.
